Description
This immature crane easily identified as a juvenile by the tan feather cap, which at maturity will be bright red. The adult parents were nearby. These birds become sexually mature and fully independent at two years of age. Each year in mid-October between 20 and 50 thousand Sandhill Cranes migrate to Southeastern Arizona. This photo was taken at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area near McNeal, Arizona.
