Description

Both sexes appear similar to a dark-colored female Mallard. The bill of the male typically is olive green to yellow; the bill of the female is dusky orange. In flight, bright white underwings contrast with the dark body. These birds are usually seen in pairs or small flocks and are wary of humans in most areas, but in some city parks and urban settings have become fairly tame. In some areas of the southwestern United States, it hybridizes with Mallards, producing birds with variably intermediate features. These two birds were photographed at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area near McNeal, Arizona.
